Apple integrates ChatGPT into Siri and other apps

Apple is integrating ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI-powered chatbot, into Siri and various first-party apps and features across its operating systems. The announcement was made during a keynote at WWDC 2024 in Cupertino on Monday.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about the partnership with Apple, stating that Apple shares their commitment to safety and innovation. This collaboration aligns with OpenAI's mission to make advanced AI accessible to all users.

Apple plans to allow Siri to leverage ChatGPT's expertise when needed. Users can ask Siri for menu ideas using ingredients from their garden, and Siri will consult ChatGPT for an answer with the user's permission.

Users can also interact with ChatGPT via Siri by including photos or asking questions related to documents or PDFs. ChatGPT has been integrated into system-wide writing tools like Writing Tools, enabling users to create content with ChatGPT or seek revisions and variations.

The ChatGPT integrations will roll out on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. Users can access these features for free without needing to create a ChatGPT or OpenAI account. Initially, the integrations will be powered by GPT-4o, OpenAI's flagship generative AI model.

Subscribers to OpenAI's ChatGPT premium plans will have access to paid features within Siri and other Apple apps with ChatGPT integrations. Apple emphasizes that privacy protections are in place for these integrations, with requests not being stored by OpenAI and users' IP addresses being obscured.
